Oracle Micro Edge - Vector 300 integration

Case Study:

An example of the flexibility and reliability of the Prolificx hardware platform is the Imarda and Oracle Partnership.

Client:

Oracle, the World’s largest Enterprise software company, specialises in providing a comprehensive and integrated view of operations. When Oracle was looking for a solution to expand its Telematics offering, Imarda’s Vector 300 was identified as a preferred partner product.

Problem:

Oracle’s requirement was to extend their operational view beyond the office and manage mobile assets. Oracle was looking for a flexible, easy to integrate piece of technology which would extend the offering into the field.

Solution:

Oracle selected Imarda’s Vector 300 due to its WinCE operating system which allowed easy integration with the Oracle Lite database. The Oracle MicroEdge Server which also runs on the Vector 300 allows functionality to be changed dynamically without programming and is an exceptionally powerful tool for managing mobile resources.

In each vehicle, the Vector 300 embeds the Oracle MicroEdge Server to capture the data from onboard sensors such as GPS, odometer, accelerometer, and on board diagnostics (OBD), and process the data via predefined rules and filters. This data is then stored locally in Oracle Database Lite and can be synchronized wirelessly across cellular data networks using the Oracle Database Lite Mobile Server with backend fleet management applications.

The Vector 300 made such an impact that it was held up in front of a packed audience at Oracle Open World in 2005. In front of approximately ten thousand keynote attendees, Michael Eisa from Intel, Monaco explained how the world’s first all electric sports car from Venturi had been fitted out with an end to end fleet management system using technology products from Intel, Oracle, and Prolificx to provide near instantaneous vehicle information. Using a combination of communications channels including WiMax and Cellular, Michael showed the audience near real-time updates of vehicle parameters via an Oracle web portal located in the UK.

“The enterprise Telematics market requires solutions that leverage the greatest value out of the mobile assets; to enable this, more advanced hardware solutions are required to support processing and connectivity requirements,” said Guido Burger, Business Development Manager, Oracle EMEA Telematics Solution Centre. The Prolificx Vector series of mobile gateway devices coupled with our Telematics solution framework enables us to provide an economical, flexible, and maintainable offering to our customers.”
